Auto City Speedway Results 6/5/21
As the 2021 season continues at Auto City Speedway, last Saturday night was another full night of racing.
It was sunny and hot to start out the night with a constant breeze going down the front stretch for the most part.
Again, using the new format of qualifying started the night. Heat race qualifying is now done with transponders and in groups for eight laps and the best time in each group is recorded, then overall fastest in each series is determined.
The first qualifying heat races were for the Herald Pure Stocks. The winner of the first heat race was Tony Williams (#98) and the second heat race went to John Puckett (#51).
With the Herald Pure Stocks heats completed, it was Ricky Smith (#98) recording fast time of the night with a 16.28.
The Muffler Man All American Truck series was next up and in the first heat, Ryan Cudd (#11) took the win. The second heat went to Danny Smith (#06). Fast qualifier of the bunch was Josh Delong (#067) with a 17.62.
The Modifieds hit the big track for their heat race and it was the yellow (#7) machine of Dave McManus getting the win and fast time going to Travis Eddy (#78) with a 16.25.
The new series “City 6 Cylinders” were up on the schedule next. The drivers took the green for their ten lap feature and it was first timer, Layden Delong (#43) in his “Dinoco” Petty blue hot rod taking the lead while the rest of the competition shuffled for position, as the likes of, first timer as well, Cienna Snover (#32), Silas Clayton (#12), Emily Clayton (#2) and Camren Delong (#95).
With the field getting stretched out, the big side by side battle was for second between Silas and Camren. When they took the crossed-flags for the halfway mark, Layden seemed to slow a bit giving Silas and Camren a chance to catch up to him. Layden held them off but once taking the white flag for the last lap, Layden went into turns one and two deep leaving the inside line open. As Layden came out of turn two, he caught the dirt and that gave Silas and Camren the opportunity to get by, while they still battled. Going into turn three and coming out of four, they were at the point of being three wide. Layden was still on the outside and did catch the wall. Crossing the finish line first was the #12 of Silas Clayton beating Camren Delong. Layden did get the third spot followed by Cienna and Emily.
The Herald Pure Stocks thirty lap feature was next and it was Tim Kirby (#81) and Andrew Shelters (#0) leading the field to the green. Once they got the green, it did not take long for the competition to get heated as by lap three, they were battling three wide for positions. As the laps counted down, it was Michael Hayes (#12), Tony Williams (#97), and Bruce Dunton Jr. (#19) all battling.
Hayes and Williams did go side by side back and forth for the lead, but at about lap twelve, it was Williams with the advantage. As the leaders were working to get through lapped traffic, on lap twenty-eight, Dunton was going past John Puckett (#51) who was going a lap down and they touched cutting down a tire on Dunton car. When the checkered flag flew, it was Williams, Hayes and J.D. John Doorenbos (#29) getting his second straight third place finish in his last two outings.
The Modifieds were ready to rumble on the half-mile track for their thirty five lap feature. It was Robbie Johnson (#21) and Kyle Hayden (#22) leading the pack down to the green. Once they were all wound up, it was the fast qualifier, Travis Eddy (#78) working his way to the lead. As he started to extend his lead, the battle for position from second on back was good. At the half-way mark, it was Eddy, Dave McManus (#7), Trevor Berry (#37), Ken O’Conner (#43) and Robbie Johnson. Right at that halfway mark, Johnson pulled into the pits and gave the fifth spot to Kyle Hayden and that is how they would complete the finish.
The Muffler Man All American Trucks were next and the sixteen full size trucks were ready to go thirty laps for their feature.
The #25h of Jim Harden and #11 of Ryan Cudd would lead them to the green. As the drivers shuffled for position, Harden seemed to have some mechanical issues and pulled off. Working his way to the front was Greggy Long (#38) who was battling with Zack Lopez (#18), Jason Grissom (#224), Josh Delong (#067) and Paul Rigda (#43). By lap seven, it was Delong getting by Long for the lead followed by Lopez and Rigda. At lap ten, it was second through fifth battling hard with one another. When the thirty laps were complete, it was Delong, Rigda, Ryan Cudd (#11) and Long respectfully.
The final race of the night was the Auto City Figure 8’s fifteen lapper. The top two in points are Tony Williams (#97) and Chad Lamson (#888). Tonight however, Lamson had to borrow a ride (#11 truck of Cudd’s) as his Silver Bullet had mechanical issues. As the got the green, it did not take Williams too long to get to the front followed by Josh Delong (note in his Max D #067) and Lamson. The momentum Williams had was a bit too much for the rest of the competitors as by the time the white flag was being waved, he lapped the whole field.
The next night of action will be Saturday, June 26th, with a Muffler Man of Michigan Independence Day Celebration Maximum Destruction. All the action starts at 7:00pm. Check out all the details on upcoming events at www.autocityspeedway.com and “We’ll See You at the City”.
