Auto City Speedway Results 4/26/2025
This past Saturday was the 2025 season opener at Auto City Speedway and good ole Mother Nature was testing our dedication with a bit of chilled temps and a wind just enough to be annoying, but the fans, drivers and staff all were steadfast and ‘endured’ the challenge.
It was nice to see some familiar faces/champions returning to Auto City who have been missing for a few years, as the likes of Josh Delong, Randy Clayton Jr., James Clayton, Silas Mccaslin, Tony Williams and Andrew Burton just to name a few who were competing with a large field of destruction drivers.
Also, want to give a shout out to Rusty Daggett who was on hand helping out. A special mention goes to Sue Woolworth who even made it out for opening night as a spectator.
To start things off, we have to give mention to a few new officials who are in place this season. Number one is Sean Sprague, who is the announcer at Corrigan Speedway and is the appointed Race Director this season here at Auto City. Working alongside him is his wife, Brittney Sprague serving as Chief Scorer. On the flag stand this year is Adam Rhodes, who has raced in the Pure Stock division and in the past few years has been assisting in the pits. Also, Matt Tanner is on board as Safety Director. The towing company this year helping get the disabled vehicles off the track is Price’s Towing out of Saginaw who will be at Auto City throughout the season.
So, after the invocation and National Anthem, it was time to get to the Maximum Destruction season opener.
First up was the Chain Gang race, ten laps with team-mates chained together (one towing the other). As the first green flag of the season flew, it was a couple veteran Max D drivers getting the win, Justin Pepitone pulling Gerald Persails Jr. in their #948 & #80.
The ‘wild n wooly’ twenty lap I-75 race was next on the schedule and WOW…there was a lot of stopping and going behind the buses with the battle for the lead between, Pepitone, Delong (#067), Doug Hennessy (#69), Cody Lurak (#10) and Andrew Burton (#05). When the checkered flags flew, it was Andrew Burton getting the win followed by Lurak and Pepitone respectively.
Now it was time for the ten lap Push race. From the drop of the green, the battle up front was between Delong/Clayton and Pepitone/Persails Jr. and when it was all said and done, it was Pepitone/Persails Jr. getting the victory.
Next up was the wacky ‘Reverse’ race, yes you read that right, where the competitors actually race in reverse for eight laps. When the backwards racing was done, it was Justin Pepitone getting the win in front of Ken Cottrill in the #244.
The fifteen lap Flagpole race started out pretty wild heading to the first tire in turn two. The drivers are supposed to pass the tire first, then on the second lap, do the 360 degrees around it. Before the first lap was completed, there had to be a red flag displayed to clear up the carnage around the tire from some competitors getting caught up in a pile-up. After Price’s Towing got all the disabled vehicles cleared, it was back to green. Pepitone in his Crown Vic (#948) had the lead but shortly pulled to the pits with an issue. The battle for the win was between Cody Lurak (#10), Doug Hennessy (#69), Tony Williams (#97) and Josh Delong (#067). Cody’s car was taking a beating as he battled through lapped traffic. As Cody got to the last ‘go round’ of the tire in turn four, which was pretty congested, Cody survived to get the win.
Now it was time for the fifty lap Enduro. The title definitely fit the race as it was a race of endurance. When the green flag flew, it was Delong, Pepitone and Lurak charging for the lead, but on lap four, a red flag was displayed for a driver in harm’s way. Once that vehicle was removed, it was back to racing. As the attrition wore on and drivers dropped off, it was Hennessy leading the way over Delong and Burton. Hennessy had a pretty good size lead as the laps ticked down, but around lap thirty-three, Hennessy pulled to the infield with a fire under his hood which brought out another red flag. Once they went back to green flag racing, it was Delong now in the lead with the likes of Andrew Burton, James Clayton and Rod Nettleton in tow. Burton did hold on to place second and it was Josh Delong holding on for the win.
The ten lap School Bus Figure 8 race was next and with many close calls, it was Gerald Persails Jr. getting the victory, in which he did climb on top of the bus to do his traditional ‘victory dance’.
The last race of the night was the ten lap Figure 8 Trailer race. This race definitely had its highlights as trailers were getting disconnected and battered throughout, which in turn slowly depleted the competition. When the dust settled, it was Jason Grissom (#224) getting the win.
That concluded the racing for the night until next time, Saturday; May 24th, a Memorial Day celebration honoring those who served Maximum Destruction.
