Auto City Speedway
Results August16th
The All -American Race happened this past Saturday night at Auto City Speedway. Mother Nature took the win on the first two, so it was nice to finally get one of the scheduled three races in.
Speaking of Mother Nature, she did have a presence known as there were threatening skies above. Fortunately, there were only a few sprinkles throughout the night.
Tonight, we had ‘group qualifying’ for each class. That is where a few competitors are timed for a number of laps and their best lap is the official lap for the evening. The classes racing was the All-American Pure Stocks, the All-American Trucks, the All American FWD (front wheel drive) and the Tri-State Sprints.
The AAPS were first up and it was Davison’s multi-time Auto City Speedway champion, Lonnie Saumier Jr. in his #M15 machine getting the top spot with a 16.496 around the quarter mile. In the AAT it was Mt. Morris’s Brad Reseigh’s #7 truck getting fast time with a 16.528. And the AAFWD class had Onondaga’s Todd Miller in his #33 machine topping the field with a 16.503.
The Tri-State Sprints fast qualifier of the night was also Onondaga’s John Trudell in his orange and black #7T machine going 14.419 seconds around the half mile oval.
After the invocation and the national anthem, it was time for racing.
The AAPS eight lap heat race started the night out and Bill Livesay’s #X14 grabbed the early lead, but fast qualifier Lonnie Saumier Jr. worked his way up quickly to take the lead from Livesay. When the checkered flag flew, it was Saumier Jr., Livesay and Talen Diehl #M57 in that order.
The AAT’s eight lap heat race was next. Starting on the front row was the #50 of Mark Palmer and the #51 of Ricky Gillett. When the green was dropped, it was Palmer with the early lead. The battle for the lead got a bit intense as Palmer, Delong and Gillett were going three wide at times vying for the win. When it was all said and done, Delong got the victory over Gillett and Palmer.
The second heat for the AAT was next and it was the #31 of Zane Briseno and the #95 of Cameron Delong on the front row bringing them to the green. C. Delong jumped to the lead and never looked back taking the win over Briseno with Charles Hamilton (#c79) finishing third.
Now the AAFWD division was up for their eight lap heat races. The first heat race win went to a former Lipstick Ladies competitor, Emily Clayton in her ‘Fabulous Hudson Hornet’ paint scheme #6 followed by Michael Schmidt (#53) and Troy Deuscher’s #83. The second heat race winner was Todd Miller with Randy Adams (#12A) [not thee, and no relation to the announcer at Auto City] and Zach Stiener (#8).
Due to the threat of weather, the heat races for the Tri-State Sprints we scratched from the night’s schedule. So that set up the Tri-State Sprints thirty lap feature race.
There were fifteen competitors who were on the premises, but only eleven made the feature due to attrition throughout the evening whether hot laps or qualifying. When the green flew, the pace was fast and exciting with only one yellow being displayed. There were battles up front with four lead changes. When the thirty laps were completed, it was Fort Wayne, IN’s white #7 of Matt Dimit for the win followed by George Gustafon (#97), John Trudell (#7T), a familiar name to Auto City, Trevor Berry (#0) and Brandon Tregembo respectively.
Now it was time to go back to the quarter mile for the feature races. First up was the AAPS thirty lap feature. The #M57 of Talen Diehl and the #47 of Jeremy Johnson led them to the green. Diehl got the early lead as Johnson faded back. By the second lap, the #M15 of Saumier Jr. had made his way up to second and started challenging for the lead. Also making their way up front to battle were the likes of Andrew Burton (#05), Duane Damon (#55 usually driven by Anthony Duvinois) and the #X14 of Bill Livesay. By lap eight, Saumier Jr. had the lead and Burton made his way to second. Livesay did battle up to get past Burton for that second spot and when the checkered flew, it was Saumier Jr. getting the victory over Livesay, Burton, Damon and Diehl.
The thirty lap AAT feature was next and it was the #50 of Mark Palmer and the #51 of Ricky Gillett bringing them to green. The battles were fierce and it did not take long for All American Truck Champion and fast qualifier, Josh Delong (#067) to get to that top spot. Gillett followed in second and Delong’s son, Cameron (#95) was now in third but ended up spinning about lap seven. When the thirty laps were completed, the finishing order was J. Delong, Gillett, Reseigh (#7), Hamilton (#79C) and C. Delong being the top five.
The AAFWD twenty lap feature was now up and it was the #30 of Kaleb Montague and the #95 of Daegen Clayton on the front row leading them to the green. When they got the green, the #8 of Zach Steiner jumped into the lead followed by former FWD ‘B Series’ champion Rod Nettleton’s 33R and the other #33 of Todd Miller. By lap five, Miller had gotten around Nettleton for second and started to chase down Stiener. By lap eight, Miller got the lead from Stiener. Just a few laps later, the #12A of Randy Adams had worked his way into second. When the checkered flew, the finishing order was Miller, Adams, Stiener, Nettleton and Michael Schmidt’s #53.
The last race of the night was the fifteen lap AA F8 race. Anthony Richardson had his silver #422 truck on hand for this one. When the green flew, it was Andrew Burton in his #05 getting the jump on Richardson for the lead. Josh Delong had brought his #067 Crown Vic to compete in this race as well. As the laps clicked down, Richardson developed a right rear flat and had to retire to the pits. That left Burton to extend his lead as now it was Delong in second. When the fifteen laps were completed, it was Burton getting the win over Delong. That concluded the evening of racing for the night.
The next event is Saturday, August 30th with a Back2School Bash-Maximum Destruction with special guests, the Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club on hand.
