It was another hot night of racing at Auto City on Saturday, July 17th presented by rock radio Banana 101.5. The Midwest Classic Racing Series was also on hand for the annual Tommy Bowles Memorial along with 4 other divisions.
Tommy's old racing partner Rob Roney had fast time for the Dwarf Cars with a 14.33. Heat races went to Chad Goff, Todd Getz and Kevin Ayers. The 25-lap feature soon turned into a two car battle between Goff and Roney. Jon Wylie took the early lead but Goff got by him on lap 6. Roney was shooting for his 5th Tommy Bowles win but as several caution flags slowed the event, he was unable to complete the pass. Goff kept Roney on his tail to take the win. Rounding out the top 5 were Wylie, Stephen Bobek and Craig Curtis.
Kyle Hayden paced qualifying for the Auto City Super Stocks with a 15.52 on the half-mile. Rookie Jimmy Novak and defending track champ Dennis Rederstorf took heat race wins. Pat Zorn pulled ahead of Rederstorf at the start of the 40-lap feature as Hayden jumped into second. Zorn held the top spot until lap 25 when the "Professor" finally got around and led the rest of the way for the win. Zorn stayed on Hayden's rear bumper to take second followed by Terry Bogusz, Jeff Owens and Rederstorf.
Defending champ Adam Rowe had fast time for the Modern Concrete Street Stocks with a 15.35. Jim Miller, Jr. won the dash while heat race winners were Jay Woolworth and Joe Ward. Kenny Stevens started on the pole in the 30-lap feature that went nearly caution free. Stevens used the high side of the 1/4 mile and led all the way to take the checkered flag ahead of Julian Fluty. But during post-race inspection both cars were DQ'd giving the victory to Attica's Rob Sullivan. Giving Rowe 2nd and Woolworth 3rd.
Nick Johnston was fastest for the Mt. Morris-Clio Herald Pure Stocks with a 16.54. Don Dannie and Duane Damon took heat race honors. It was Damon's night as the "Pit-bull" took the lead early in the 25-lap feature and held on for the win. Chad Lamson nosed out Johnston at the line for second while, but again during post-raced inspection, Lamson was DQ’d giving Johnston, Jeff Jostock and Andrew Burton rounding out the top 4.
Burton finished off a successful night as he took the lead on lap 1 of the Bob Kern's Auto Repair Krazy 8's and stayed in front of Duane Damon for the win. Chad Lamson, Tony Williams and Rick Dinius, Jr. finished in the top 5.
